The Suez Canal is an artificial waterway,
160km (100miles) long, from Port Said to
Suez, linking the Mediterranean and Red seas,
separating Africa from Asia, and providing
the shortest eastwards sea route from Europe.
It was opened 1869, nationalized 1956,
blocked by Egypt during the Arab-Israeli War
1967, and not reopened until 1975.
